Another new year is here. And how you start it carries weight. I don’t believe you need the new year to reset or to make resolutions. But it is the best time to clear your mind, create some mental space, organize your life, and set yourself up for success in the new year. But how…
A few months ago, I set out to get to know the creative community in Greenville a little better. By creative community, I simply mean people who have to think for a living – those who generate ideas, solve problems, and produce solutions off the dome. I surveyed 120 people people in Greenville across a range of professions, skillsets, and ages. And by surveyed 120 people, I mean I emailed almost 500 people, and got 120 responses.
I touched base with marketers, designers, painters, jewelry makers, managers, entrepreneurs, photographers, musicians, videographers, web developers, nonprofit leaders, writers, pastors, engineers, customer support staffers, realtors, and more.
I surveyed people with a wide range of experience and from a variety of backgrounds. Some of these people have been in their practice for less than a year, others for 12+ years. A handful are freelancers, many at agencies, and many working in-house for a variety of organizations.
My goal was to get to know the creative people of Greenville a little better; to learn their routines, inspirations, challenges – even where they go for tacos.
In this post we’ll look at some routines, inspirations, and challenges of Greenville’s creative community. We’ll also see where the creative people of Greenville go to relax and eat tacos. We’ll dive into:
BUT FIRST – VOCATIONS
As I mentioned, I surveyed 120 people throughout Greenville. The responders’ vocations, jobs, and skills ranged from metal worker to marketer and from entrepreneur to videographer. A handful work in the nonprofit world, a few teach, a couple are pastors, and one is Rick Roberts running for Greenville County Council.
I. COMMON ROUTINES
I asked a few different questions in way of routines and habits. I think you can learn a lot about someone by looking at the things they do consistently. “You are what you repeatedly do,” right? Here are a few things creative people in Greenville repeatedly do:
AVERAGE WAKE-UP TIME
Creative people in Greenville wake up early – but not too early. They love to read and exercise. Not everyone loves to journal, and few thrive without structure. There’s a lot of love for blogs and podcasts, and magazines are on their way out as a source of education.
I think routines and habits can tell you a lot about someone, but maybe what defines a creative most are the challenges they face and overcome. If you struggle with any of the following, welcome to the team:
Self promotion is one of the biggest challenges creative people in Greenville face, followed by burnout and fear of failure.
Good to know we’re all not alone, huh?
One of my favorite thing to ask someone is, “What book has inspired or influenced your thinking most?” Some of the answers I received are about business and career, others about art and productivity. Here are the top 12 books that have inspired creatives in Greenville, in order of most mentioned:
TOP 12 INSPIRING BOOKS:
Another important question in the life of a creative is, “What tools make your life easier?” Many responded with tools for teams, and others with tools for individuals. A few responses were not as much tools as they were systems or models. Here are some top-used tools in Greenville:
